Benzene News"Suit Filed for Cleanup Retribution" June 30, 2008 According to recent reports, Oklahoma City and Tulsa are among four dozen companies that could be forced to pay millions for a benzene cleanup. The cleanup, which could cost an estimated $30 million, is going to take place at the Double Eagle Superfund site. Lawsuit Allegations The lawsuit names 44 parties and claims that they all conspired to dispose of waste oil, which contained hazardous substances like benzene, at a site near downtown Oklahoma City. The suit has been filed by the state and federal governments in a federal court in Oklahoma City. Contaminated Site The site where the waste was supposedly disposed of was added to the EPA’s list of contaminated sites in 1989. At the time, waste oil and fuels reportedly dumped toxins there. In 1998, contractors clear the waste, which cost the federal and state governments an estimated $31.7 million. Among those named in the suit is the Union Pacific Railroad. The suit states the railroad company owns the site and is therefore responsible for its cleanup. (Source: NewsOk.com) Have you or someone you know been exposed to benzene?
