Benzene News"The Fight for Clean Air in Tonawanda" June 16, 2008 In recent months concerns have been raised about the air quality in Tonawanda, New York, due to new findings of high levels of benzene. Tonawanda serves as the central locale for industrial air emitters in the state and hosts over 45 facilities within a two square mile radius. High Levels of Benzene Air monitors have reportedly showed high levels of benzene throughout Tonawanda and now health and city officials are growing concerned. Benzene is a cancer causing pollutant that can cause leukemia and other forms of cancers to those who are exposed. According to reports, 25 residents have volunteered to personally monitor the air they breathe each day to determine how hazardous the problem really is. Volunteers Monitor the Air Jackie James, from the Clean Air Collation, is currently recruiting more volunteers to wear a small badge that will monitor the air they breathe each day. “I believe a lot of people in this neighborhood wish for something to be done, but they don’t know where to start,” explains James. Joe Suznovich has lived and worked in Tonawanda all his life and claims he was exposed for eleven years to benzene and other harmful chemicals without his knowledge while at work. “I welcome the effort to find out and find a solution,” says Suznovich.
