Benzene News"Chemical Cleanup Plan Revised" July 7, 2008 According to reports, a vacuum might be used to get rid of chemicals like benzene that are flowing into Liberty Creek in Tennessee. Another option proposed by a paint manufacturing company is that the shape of the creek be changed in order to help progress the cleanup. Paint Maker Under Fire Egyptian Lazquer Manufacturing Co., has been under much scrutiny in recent months due to the chemical pollution they are bestowing upon the creek. State and local environmental officials have asked them to revise their cleanup solution plans several times and they are reportedly planning to ask for another revision. Plans Undergo Revisions The plan, which has been delayed for months, proposes new steps to prevent chemical leaks from continuing. “I believe the plans address first and foremost the health risk and the risk to the environment, which is what the state regulatory agency is concerned about,” says Bill Penny, the attorney for the paint company. Dorene Bolze, who serves as the Executive Director at Harpeth River Watershed, reportedly rejected the latest revision of the plan because it doesn’t do enough to address the benzene pollution coming from the company’s property.
