Benzene News"Residents of Champaign Fear Exposure to Benzene" January 31, 2008 Residents in Champaign, IL fear that they have unknowingly been exposed to benzene for decades. A coalition, consisting of students from the University of Illinois, have partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the areas of concern. Father Concerned About Water Well M.D. Pelmore built his basement over abandoned water well when he first bought his home in Champaign and is now worried that the groundwater vapors, which could possess benzene, could make their way into his house. Pelmore is also concerned that for all these years his children could have been exposed to benzene, which is a known carcinogen and can be extremely harmful upon exposure. “I don’t think they told us anything about how dangerous all this stuff was,” Pelmore recently told AmerinIP. Documents Show High Benzene Levels Students from the University of Illinois began the benzene investigation last spring when they asked the Environmental Protection Agency for copies of documents about the coal gas site believed to be contaminating the area. The documents reportedly showed that there were high levels of contaminants such as benzene, toluene, and aromatic hydrocarbon compounds surrounding the site. “What we’re doing right now is making people aware,” explains Aaron Ammons, who helped found the CU Citizens for Peace & Justice. “Why does it take 20 years to get something done? Because there’s no public outcry.” (Source: Red Orbit) Do you believe that you’ve been wrongfully exposed to benzene?
