"Graduates of High School Face Cancer"

September 4, 2007

The graduates of Bayshore High School in Florida are growing concerned as the number of cancer cases among their fellow alumni increases.

Former students claim that diesel fuel tanks buried near the building of the school contained cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene.

Cases of Cancer Increase

In 1999 Terri Lumsden Jewell, a 37-year-old mother of two, discovered that the bruise on her leg was more than a bump from the car door, it was actually a symptom indicating a late stage of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

After Jewell's death two years later, her sister, Cheryl Jozsa and several other local families began investigating the random illnesses that seemed to be plaguing their community.

The families of those diagnosed with various forms of cancer believe that the diesel fuel tanks located on the school grounds are to blame.

“We have so many alumni dying from rare and aggressive cancers,” says Jozsa. “In 90 percent of the cases, there's no family history at all. It's just really scary.”

Suspicion Grows

Jozsa, also a graduate of Bayshore, set up a Web site that enabled Bayshore alumni to connect and share about their illnesses.

Of the 300 that have contacted her, 63 have reported cases of cancer and another 20 claimed they had children with birth defects.

In the mid-1990's, the school reportedly had an issue with a 10,000 gallon cylinder, which was buried south of the old high school building and city officials worried that the tank could be leaking.

This being one of the many incidents related to gas links reported at the school throughout the decades.

A Conclusion Reached

Recently, the Florida Department of Health concluded that those living and working near the Bayshore High area and who were drinking the well water before 2004, face elevated risks of benzene exposure and cancer possibilities.

These residents and workers reportedly have a low to moderate chance of having kidney and liver cancer, along with leukemia and lymphoma.
