"Lawsuits Against BP Settled Out of Court"

March 27, 2008

The lawsuits that are remaining against BP in regards to the former Amoco Sugar Creek Refinery are reportedly being settled out of court.

A total of 31 cases were filed claiming benzene contamination and according to reports, 28 still remain.

Residents Claim Exposure

Residents in and around Sugar Creek claimed in the suits that they were exposed to toxic substances, including benzene, being emitted from the BP refinery.

The plaintiffs released a statement last week stating that in conjunction with BP, they have agreed to resolve the suits.

However, neither party would expose any details of the settlement.

Benzene Causes Suits

Of the 31 cases filed against BP, only one, involving Leonard Ryan, whose wife died from leukemia, supposedly went to trial.

BP reportedly settled two other cases for undisclosed amounts out of court.

These cases involved Justin Detel, a resident of Sugar Creek who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Sean Reed, who also lived in Sugar Creek and developed leukemia.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources were aware of the numerous spills and leaks that took place at the Sugar Creek Refinery, putting residents at risk.
