Benzene Safety"Meeting Held for Victims of Benzene Exposure" September 24, 2007 Those affected by the benzene leak that occurred at the CITGO Corpus Christi, Texas East Plant Refinery between 1994 and 2003 are being asked to come forward and tell their story to the U.S. Department of Justice. Although they may not receive financial compensation for any injuries or illnesses they have endured, the department finds it necessary to find out just how many people were affected by the tanks at the plant, which were emitting benzene. Illegal Emission of Benzene CITGO was reportedly illegally operating two massive tanks at their Corpus Christi plant during that period of time and was convicted in June for their wrongdoing. The tanks were supposedly a source of emissions, including benzene, which could have affected the residents in the surrounding areas. CITGO Convicted CITGO Petroleum Corporation and CITGO Refining and Chemicals Company L.P. were convicted of operating the two tanks as oil separators without the required emission control equipment, which violates the Clean Air Act. Meeting Held Next week, officials from the Environmental Crimes Section of the Justice Department are holding a two-day community meeting to help identify those affected by the benzene exposure. The agency believes those who inhaled the carcinogen for so many years have a right to be heard. (Source: NewsWire) Do you believe you were wrongfully exposed to benzene?
