Benzene Exposure Risk"Benzene Lawsuits Seek Millions in Damages" August 8, 2006 Two Boeing employees who developed a potentially deadly cancer as a result of work-related benzene exposure have recently filed lawsuits against manufacturers of benzene products. Benzene is a carcinogen known to cause acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and is found in a wide array of products including pipe fittings, solvents, adhesives, pesticides, gasoline, rubber, and more. Individuals at the highest risk of benzene exposure are often chemical and industrial plant employees, refinery workers, and synthetic rubber production workers. The lawsuits claim that the manufacturers of the benzene products failed to warn consumers about the serious health risks associated with their prolonged use. “These lawsuits seek justice on behalf of people who were trying to do their jobs and were unknowingly exposed to benzene, a known cancer causing substance. The manufacturers of benzene containing products need to be held accountable for their actions,” said attorney Charles Paglialunga. The two suits are seeking unspecified damages, which is typically the case with benzene lawsuits. Most benzene lawsuits, however, seek punitive and other damages in the millions. “People who developed acute myelogenous leukemia from benzene exposure deserve compensation,” Paglialunga said.
