Abandoned Industrial Dump Site May Pose Benzene Risk

October 26 , 2006

An old industrial site where large volumes of dangerous chemicals, including benzene and butanone, were dumped near a school, a stream, and many houses, may pose serious health risks to residents and school children.

The Hassan Barrel Co. recycled barrels on its site in Indiana until 2003, when its owners apparently abandoned it.

They left barrels of chemicals, dilapidated buildings, and an open pit full of an orange-brown toxic stew.

The EPA contracted a cleanup, and the remaining barrels were removed, but the soil is still contaminated with benzene, toluene, cadmium, lead, mercury, chromium, butanone, and other hazardous substances.

Children play in nearby ditches and water features.

Benzene is a known carcinogen that can cause leukemia and other serious health conditions. The other chemicals may also cause cancer, neurological disorders, lung problems, and kidney or liver failure. Many of the chemicals are fatal with enough exposure.

The cleanup was never finished, and residents are worried. One neighbor, Donna Schoenle said, they pulled out and that’s about it.” The Scoenles own the property next to the old site, and live across the street. “We were just lucky to get as much done as they did.”

Adams Elementary School is blocks away.

“I know some of the neighbors have kids that would be over there,” said Schoenle. “There was something like a lagoon – kids would be running through it.”

Hassan officials may face criminal charges, according to EPA spokesman Mick Hans.

EPA officials hope to settle a suit in progress against a number of companies who did business with Hassan Barrel Co. The settlement aims to spread the burden of cleanup costs, allowing it to be performed satisfactorily.
