"Firefighters Suspect Benzene Contamination "

December 22, 2006

Massachusetts firefighters are concerned that a building used as their station for nearly 13 years is contaminated with benzene and various other toxic substances. Over the last two decades, 15 firefighters who worked at the building have died of cancer.

The death of Lt. Kevin Hough, 56, from lung cancer just last month marks the latest in the string of deaths.

“The union feels there is a disproportionate number of cancer diagnoses among firefighters who have worked in the building. There were two new diagnoses in the past week,” said Jay Colbert, head of the firefighter’s union.

The building – which is located at 220 Washington Street in Somerville – is currently being used as the town’s police station but still houses some equipment and trailers nearby house the fire prevention and arson units.

Investigation into reports of contamination is ongoing, but preliminary tests have indicated the presence of hazardous chemicals like lead, benzene, and chromium. The president of the Patrolmen’s Union said he has long suspected contamination.

“Lead and benzene are some of the most dangerous contaminants you can find, and I believe they are rampant in this building,” he said.

The investigation was prompted by a lawsuit filed last year on behalf of employees and an epidemiologist. Toxic substances such as benzene have been linked to numerous health ailments including cancer.
