Installing public water lines seems to be the only solution to solving this serious issue, however, it is a costly one. Benzene In Water According to reports, benzene contamination has been an ongoing problem in the city. Officials at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources say they began researching and attempting to work in the problem in the 1980’s. More recently, after benzene escaped from underground gasoline tanks and corroded the water wells, the issue has come to surface and residents are worried. The level of benzene that is in the wells of some residents far exceeds state health standards. It has been labeled a high risk by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and from five to 11 of the resident’s homes in Fayetteville are currently contaminated. Lengthy and Expensive Cleanup City officials claim it could take a year or longer before the resident in West Fayetteville are set up with clean water. “Cleaning up the water is too expensive, “ says Gordon Nicholson, the chair at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. However, expensive or not, city officials realize that finding a solution for the problem is essential and needs to be done as soon as possible.
