Benzene Safety"Benzene Cleanup Continues" September 17, 2007 The cleanup in what is now known as Delaware's biggest toxic spill, continues as the costs for taxpayers continue to rise, recently hitting $64 million. The Environmental Protection Agency claims taxpayers will continue to pay as the cleanup prices rise. This figure doesn't include the $10 million that the city of Delaware could have to pay towards it share of work at the bankrupt Metachem Products plant. The plant was at one time considered one of the world's largest chlorinated benzene producers. Metachem Goes Bankrupt In 2002, the owners of Metachem declared bankruptcy leaving behind more than $60 million in debt and almost $40 million pounds of chemicals and waste. This waste was reportedly at one time used in herbicides, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. Benzene Contaminates Surrounding Areas After the benzene spill that occurred at the plant, the soil, groundwater and wetlands surrounding the area were contaminated and tests found that they were flammable and would be fatal if consumed by wildlife. The EPA is planning on proposing a cleanup of the plant in the upcoming year as they continue to study the contaminated area and water lines leading into surrounding towns.
