"Benzene Concerns in Anchorage"

December 13, 2007

Researchers from the University of Alaska are beginning a study to detect the amounts of benzene that Anchorage residents are being exposed to in their homes.

Due to gasoline and the Alaskan climate, those living in Anchorage are reportedly at a higher risk for benzene exposure and scientists are working to find out the exact size of that risk.

Researchers Conduct Study

Mary Ellen Gordian, a physician and professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage is conducting a study to test the benzene levels in 400 local homes.

In an initial study, Gordian found that one-third of the homes with unhealthy levels of benzene had attached garages.

“We had families exposed to levels way above the minimal risk level for

acute exposure, and they’re being exposed to it 24-7 because it’s in their home,” explains Gordian.

Gordian is hoping that she can enlist 400 people in the study and thinks it is an important project since every new house in Anchorage is being built with an attached garage.

Alaskans at High Risk for Exposure

Research has shown that Alaskans are at a higher risk for being exposed to benzene due to the gasoline that is refined from North Slope crude oil.

“We’re the only place that uses gas with about five percent benzene in it,” explains Gordian. “
