"Apple Denies that "Mac Pro" Emits Benzene"

October 7 , 2008

Apple, an industry-leading technology and software company, has recently denied claims that its Mac Pro emits benzene, a sweet-smelling, colorless liquid that is known to cause cancer and other health problems.

Produced from coal tar or crude oil, benzene is commonly used in the production of synthetic materials, such as:

• Gasoline
• Glues
• Paints
• Pesticides
• Plastics
• Rubbers

Because benzene is currently known to be carcinogenic, it is often replaced by its safer alternative toluene for consumer products.

What is the "Mac Pro?”

The Mac Pro is a state-of-the-art desktop computer, commonly referred to as a "workstation," that Apple first unveiled in January 2008.

Unlike earlier forms of this computer model, known as "Power Macs,” the Mac Pro has been successfully aimed at a highly technical consumer base. To serve these users, Apple has increased the storage expansion capacity, improved the design and revolutionized the processing capabilities of the newest version of the Mac Pro.

Accusations of Benzene Emissions from the Mac Pro

Claims that the Mac Pro was emitting benzene first arose in Liberation, a French technical periodical. According to this report, INERIS – a French research facility that specializes in studying industrial and consumer products – had found that the Mac Pro was emitting a bizarre odor.

Upon investigating the source and nature of the odor, French researchers found evidence that the odor was the result hot plastic and/or surrounding materials on the internal processor. Analysis of the odor itself led these researchers to identify the scent as benzene.

Toxic Effects of Benzene

While inhaling large amounts of benzene can cause death, at low levels over a short period of time, benzene inhalation can cause:

• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Increased heart rate
• Tremors
• Unconsciousness.

Over longer periods of time, benzene exposure is known to cause:

• Anemia
• Birth defects
• Blood infections
• Death
• Immune system suppression
• Kidney cancer
• Leukemia

Apple's Response

In response to these accusations of benzene emissions, Apple has conducted its own research and stated that its researchers have found no evidence of benzene. However, this verdict is not final, as the company does still have number of similar studies underway.

Apple hopes to definitively support or deny the claim of benzene emissions from the Mac Pro in the near future.
