Benzene Safety"Benzene Overlooked in Alaska" November 8, 2007 Earlier this week and after more than 20 years of testing cars for air pollutants, the city of Anchorage's emission testing program went up in smoke. City officials decided that after December 2009, there will no longer be tests and fees, and there will be no more vehicle inspection programs in Anchorage. Many Opposed to Decision Many living in Anchorage are opposed to the decision that has been made regarding air pollutants. “Unfortunately, in this case, public health has been a casualty of politics,” says Marge Larson, a representative of the American Lung Association. Clean air advocated agree saying that even though Anchorage has had a good handle on its carbon monoxide emissions in the past, there's no excuse to look the other way. "Anchorage has the highest benzene levels of any city in this country and that's because gasoline has a very high percentage of benzene," said Dr. Mary Ellen Gordian, member of the I/M Task Force. Worried for the Future "I think that sometimes this Assembly is not particularly engaged or committed to planning for the future," says assembly member, Sheila Selkregg. Selkregg's proposed an idea to modify the program as opposed to eliminating it altogether that will go up for a public hearing in two weeks.
