Benzene Safety"Petition to Regulate Air Fresheners" September 27, 2007 Several environmental organizations are asking the federal government to better investigate air fresheners. Recent scientific studies reportedly show that the products can aggravate asthma and pose other health risks. Many air fresheners reportedly contain harmful chemicals like benzene, which families are exposed to daily in their households. Air Fresheners Pulled from Stores In response to the groups' petition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Walgreen Co. have pulled three air fresheners from stores nationwide. According to reports, air fresheners contain harmful chemicals like benzene and have been linked to breathing problems, developmental problems in babies and cancer in animals. Household Exposure The environmental groups have argued that in houses, offices and restrooms people are being exposed to a “veritable cocktail of dangerous and volatile organic compounds. In cases of mold and damp indoor environments, air fresheners may hide an indicator of potentially serious health threats to the respiratory system,” claims the petition. The groups are asking for truth-in-advertising labeling that would require a listing of all the ingredients in all air fresheners. They also believe that the government should ban all ingredients that could be linked to cancer, other illnesses, and/or cause allergies.
